Station III: Jesus Falls the First TimeAlthough not directly mentioned in the Gospel, Jesus' fall is implied by His weakness and the need for Simon of Cyrene to assist with the carrying of the Cross.

Oppression of all kinds are manifestations of human sinfulness and are overcome through the Cross. Oppression, injustice, racism, hatred, ... these things and others can crush a people. In their suffering and weakness, Christ models the determination and resolve necessary to rise and resist, ultimately triumphing over sin and death. "The arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice" (MLKing Jr)

In our weakness and exhausting, it can be as if we are barely able to cling to hope. Yet by Faith and fidelity and the strength of Grace, we look forward to the dawn.

We may begin with resolve and determination to pursue the life of Faith which leads to salvation, but that resolve can and will be tested, our shortcomings revealed, and our efforts may seem to be futile. In the words of St. Benedict "it may seem difficult ... but do not abandon the way that leads to salvation."

We are weak, but He is strong.

Direct oppression is not the only kind which crushes humanity. The need to oppress, the need for aquisition, the need to dominate, fear of the 'other' - these things also dehumanize and degrade us. In the words of theologan Gustavo Gutierrez, "the oppressed must be freed from oppression, and the oppressor must be freed from the need to oppress."
