Rudolf Schwarz Plan IV: The Sacred JourneyThe fourth in a series of eight articles exploring the church models of 20th century liturgical architect, Rudolf Schwarz. Written in 1938, Schwarz’s book, Zum Bau der Kirche, was published in English as The Church Incarnate: The Sacred Function of Christian Architecture, in 1958. This extended meditation on the spirituality and theology of seven conceptual models represent more than mere creative designs. The models are significant sacramental/liturgical aspects of the Christian life experienced in the liturgy and those who celebrate it within architectural space. The following articles examine real-world examples, both historical and contemporary, which find their ultimate unity in the Cathedral of All Time itself built with the living stones of God’s People.
