Station V: Simon of Cyrene helps carry the Cross

In the Gospel, Simon is pressed into service to assist Jesus carrying the cross, likely against his will, at great risk, and without understanding the situation. Many suffer today in similar manner, unwillingly, and without understanding the cause of their suffering. This is particularly true of victims of abuse, violence, war, racism and other injustices imposed by powers beyond their control. As Church, we are called to assist them, helping relieve them of their burden.

In spite of circumstances, Simon does help carry the Cross. In him we may also see a model of the Church, which sees Christ in the suffering of others and fearlessly helps raise them up.

"Christ shares in our humanity, that we may share in His divinity." (St. John Chrysostom)

Real or imagined weakness cannot prevent us from taking up the Cross with Christ.

Christ's humility extends to accepting assistance in his saving work. Simon's act reminds us that we, too, as His Body, the Church, must assist in the redeeming work of Christ. This is the essence of being a Eucharistic People.
