Cowie Chapel
Carbon City, Arkansas
Deacon Bob Cowie's bell collection is one of the unique treasures of Arkansas. When he proposed the idea of turning one into the font in his private chapel it was a stroke of pure genius. Suspended below the font bell is the oldest bell in his collection (A.D. 1657). The upper bell has a diameter of 9" while the lower bell is 14". The stand was constructed of sycamore from a tree planted on the site in 1938 by one of the Benedictine Sisters who taught at what was then St. Anne Church and school. Appropriately, the chapel is titled "St. Anne of the Bells."
